Operation Old Glory Honors the American Flag This Veterans Day

This Veterans Day, Comcast, along with the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC) and the Semper Marine Detachment #205 in Vineland, NJ, joined forces to host a special retirement ceremony that paid tribute to our nation’s heroes and the symbol that represents their service: Our American Flag.

The flags came from homes and businesses across our region collected through Operation Old Glory, a unique Comcast initiative that replaces damaged flags at no cost to the property owners and ceremoniously retires the worn flags in accordance with the United States Flag Code. Since 2017, 50 members of Comcast’s Operation Old Glory Flag Ambassador group have replaced nearly 2,000 flags throughout the Greater Philadelphia area alone.

Attendees gathered at the Semper Marine Detachment #205 for a special program that included a color guard presentation, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem sung by local singer Alexandra Brodzik, and the formal retirement of American flags. The ceremony, held following the City of Vineland’s Veterans Day event at Landis Park, included lunch from Mission BBQ.

“It is an incredible honor to partner with Comcast to recognize the efforts of their volunteers and retire flags that belonged to our neighbors,” said Joe Brooks, Executive Director of the Veterans Multi-Service Center. “This effort reflects the respect and gratitude we hold for our nation’s veterans and the symbols of their service. We’re not only retiring these flags with dignity but also honoring those who have sacrificed for our country and strengthening our local veteran community.”

“Operation Old Glory is more than a flag replacement program – it’s a way to preserve the deep personal connections people have to our nation’s symbol,” said Sean Casey, Comcast’s Senior Director of Military and Veteran Affairs. “Whether through Operation Old Glory or installing and maintaining Xfinity products and services for our customers, Comcast works every day to keep people connected to what matters most.”

To prepare for this event, members of Comcast’s Veterans Network hosted a Team UP project at the Semper Marine Detachment #205 to beautify the site and prepare the flags. Team UP empowers our teammates to show up for their communities in meaningful ways.

The Semper Marine Detachment #205 also needed a new flag – and our Comcast Flag Ambassadors happily raised a new set of stars and stripes to end the day.

This event demonstrates Comcast’s long-term commitment to Cumberland County – and we look forward to continuing our investments in the county and beyond.
