Honoring the American Flag Through Operation Old Glory

For the past eight years, Comcast’s Freedom Region employees across Greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware have proudly honored the American flag through Operation Old Glory, a unique initiative started by a veteran employee in Delaware. The program replaces damaged flags outside homes and businesses at no cost to the property owners.

Comcast’s Veteran’s Network Employee Resource Group powers this initiative. Its participants, known as Flag Ambassadors, volunteer their time and energy to identify and replace worn flags.

When a flag reaches the end of its life, United States Flag Code calls for flags to be ceremoniously retired with dignity. Since 2022, Comcast has partnered with the Delaware County Veterans Memorial to retire collected flags during their annual Flag Day Ceremony, which also recognizes their Freedom Medal Honorees.

At this year’s ceremony, more than 150 American flags, collected from across Greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and northern Delaware, were retired. This brings the total number of flags replaced since 2017 to nearly 1,500 – and that number continues to grow every day.

“From daycare centers to fire stations to the front yard of a veteran who can no longer raise the flag himself, our Flag Ambassadors share an unwavering commitment to our country and its symbol,” said Sean Casey, Senior Director of Military Affairs at Comcast. “Whether we’re connecting a deployed service member to their newborn child through Xfinity Internet or preserving people’s connection to the American flag, Comcast remains committed to keeping customers connected to the moments that matter.”
