Bringing A New Flag – and Smiles – to Children’s Corner Preschool
Tiberah Berhanu, a Comcast employee and West Orange, NJ, resident, recently noticed that the American flag at Children’s Corner, the daycare and preschool in Roseland where her son attends, was worn and tattered after the harsh winter. Wanting to help, she reached out to Comcast’s Veterans Network (VetNet) Employee Resource Group to coordinate a replacement through Comcast’s Operation Old Glory Program.
That’s where Jermaine Kelly stepped in. A Network Maintenance Technician, veteran, and proud member of VetNet, Jermaine is also a Flag Ambassador for Operation Old Glory.
Through this program, Comcast Flag Ambassadors honor people’s connections to the American flag and give back to the communities we serve by replacing worn or damaged flags on homes and businesses free of charge, whether they are customers or not.
The school’s director, Jamie Taneja, had planned to replace the flag once the weather improved, but she was incredibly grateful when Comcast offered to take care of it.
“What a great service Comcast provides,” Jamie said. “It was such a beautiful day, and we played ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’ It was truly a touching moment for us all.”
As Jermaine raised the new flag, the moment turned special when the children and staff of the daycare came outside to watch. As it reached the top of the flagpole, the children broke into applause, cheering and calling out their thanks – their excitement and gratitude a powerful reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a big impact.
“Operation Old Glory is a wonderful example of how compassion, teamwork, and community spirit can come together to make a meaningful difference,” Tiberah said. “Whether big or small, moments like this remind me that we all have the power to brighten someone’s day.”
