Guest Post: Comcast Cares for Latino Communities of Greater Philadelphia

By Cynthia F. Figueroa, President and CEO of Congreso de Latinos Unidos

Each year, Comcast employees across the country join with local community organizations for a volunteer day of service called Comcast Cares Day. Employees and clients of Congreso de Latinos Unidos have volunteered at Comcast Cares Day sites in Philadelphia and Camden over the years, but for the past two we have been proud to host Comcast at Congreso for projects that benefit our service area, where the majority of Philadelphia’s Latino population resides.

This past Comcast Cares Day, nearly 200 volunteers from Comcast, Telemundo62, NBC10 and Congreso descended on our campus in North Philadelphia for a day of public service projects. Volunteers helped to expand our community garden, cleaned up the surrounding neighborhood, installed a new gate and fencing, provided new picnic tables, contributed to a mural expansion and brightened up a school play yard with fun paint projects.

We appreciate Comcast including us in their incredible day of volunteerism and can’t wait for Comcast Cares Day 2016!

We also appreciate the financial and in-kind support Comcast provides to us throughout the year. This generous support allows us to deliver necessary services to strengthen our Latino community through comprehensive education, employment, health and social services. Help from companies like Comcast helped us to earn the title of NCLR (National Council of La Raza) Affiliate of the Year in 2014.

Beyond our immediate community, Comcast does tremendous work as a media leader in helping Latinos to communicate and celebrate our culture. Last year, Comcast NBCUniversal served as broadcast partners for NCLR’s American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Awards, and is also one of the nation’s largest providers of Latino programming packages.

Working with such a steady corporate partner as Comcast has helped us to further our mission to strengthen Latino communities through social, economic, education and health services, leadership development and advocacy. Congreso looks forward to a brighter future thanks to Comcast’s unwavering support and generosity.
